The Story of Deli & My Decision to Offer Custom Portraits

Deli, a female boxer/bulldog mix, came into our family when she was 11 months old.  She had already been through so much – two homes that didn’t work out for her and a recently fractured leg.  Though we didn’t plan on having a dog (she originally belonged to our son) and she was indeed a handful, she won our hearts with her playfully inventive, adventurous and boisterous nature.
We were told countless times that the two breeds that made up Deli tended to have short lives, typically not living past 8 years.  As it turned out, she really didn’t begin to slow down until she was 8, and went on to live five more years!  As an older dog, Deli had much arthritic pain.  Even so, every night she was determined to travel the three flights of stairs from our bedroom to my husband’s home office, just to get that single, small treat she knew he reserved for her.  In her 13th year Deli deteriorate rapidly, her legs at times giving out completely.
With a real concern for her safety, we coaxed ourselves into the difficult decision of having her in-home euthanized.  We booked an appointment with Alyssa Coulombe, of Serenity Veterinary Services, Edmonton, AB.
In the afternoon, after a full day of Deli’s favourite things (including a great deal of steak and her all-time favourite – licking our plates clean!) Alyssa arrived.  Her approach was incredibly tender, with thoughtful and compassionate regard.  She was there with us and for us, and gave us private space and the time we needed to express our final good-byes.  We missed Deli for some time afterwards – all the little things – and grieved her loss.
My inspiration for offering custom portraits comes out this experience with Alyssa’s humane in-home euthanasia service.  I wish to offer something truly valuable to others, who hold such love for another, either still with them, or grieving their loss.

How will the work proceed?

To begin the process, we will discuss what you would like to see in the portrait.  Then, I will ask you to provide me with the following resources:

Reference Photos:
  1. At least one photo should reveal the pose you prefer;
  2. additional photos should show identifying features and provide clarification in shadow areas; and finally,
  3. any photos that reveal the energy and personality of your loved one.
Character Text:

Please provide a brief written description that will give me insight into your loved one’s character.   You may find it easier to start with the photos.  They may help to prompt you as you consider what to write.

The Portrait:

Unless otherwise requested, this will be my approach to the work:
I will paint digitally at a minimum size of 300 dpi, 2400 x 3000 pixels.  I will use a Wacom tablet and stylus, in concert with digital software brushes to simulate traditional mediums (coloured pencil, watercolours, oils, etc.)  Painting digitally allows for print-on-demand versatility, so that you are not limited to a single, frameable copy.
When the portrait is complete, I will provide you with digital files in three formats:

  • uncompressed tiff (high resolution, for quality printing);
  • png (high resolution, for print requiring no white background); and,
  • jpg (low resolution, for sharing via email or on social media, etc).

If alternative files types are required, I can provide them upon request.
The files at the size indicated above will allow for quality printing of up to an 8″ x 10″ image size, for 11″ x 14″ frame size.

Timeframe:

In terms of timeframe, much will depend on composition complexity.  I will begin the work once I have received all the reference materials.  For a portrait of moderate complexity, my goal will be to have your loved one’s portrait complete within a two-week period.

Remuneration:

Portraits based on the criteria above start at $350.00 CAD. Single subject-only portraits represent this price point. Added features, such as background scenery and/or additional characters, can be negotiated.
A $150.00 CAD deposit will be required to start the work.  Upon completion, the remaining balance will be required before the portrait files are delivered.
Funds will be delivered via eTransfer.  Following the final payment I will send an email containing a Google Drive link.  From this link you will be able to download your portrait files.

Refunds/Returns:

I do not offer refunds or returns for custom portraits; however, if you are dissatisfied I will work closely with you to bring the portrait as close to your vision as possible.

"My husband and I absolutely adore the portrait Suzanne has put together of our Bowie! She truly captured his personality and likeness, it looks just like him! Suzanne was amazing to work with. She takes the time to get to know your pet through you to ensure she gets everything just right! I would recommend her to anyone looking for a keepsake of their furry family member."
