Walton’s Mill Park Human History & Ecology Sign
Human industry began along Temple Stream, Maine in 1781, with the building of a grist mill on one side and a saw mill on the other. A dam was built shortly after, in 1790. Changing hands several times, industry along the stream continued well into the 1960s. In 1977 the land was offered to the town of Farmington, to be used for recreational purposes.
In 2000, the federal government finalized the endangered species act listing for Atlantic salmon and Temple Stream was within the listed designated critical habitat. For the past 8 years the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), together with the town of Farmington, have been working to remove the dam altogether and restore Temple Stream’s natural habitat. The illustration above was created in February 2025, for the new Walton’s Mill Park Human History & Ecology Sign. The sign will be displayed in the park this coming spring.
